Your belly will be happy thanks to Mexico City’s gastronomy that brings together every receipt in the country. We all know tacos are delicious but why don't you try other dishes? In this article, you will find 8 dishes you must try in your visit to delight your palate.
Warning: We are not responsible for any intention to not leave the country after being bewitched by this dishes.
1. Chilaquiles
Your new favorite brekkie. Chilaquiles are fried corn tortilla pieces coated with delicious red or green sauce accompanied by sour cream, cheese and onion – red chilaquiles tend to be less spicy or not at all. You can eat chilaquiles with or without steak, fried eggs, shredded chicken, jerky, flank steak, chorizo, or whatever you like.
There is no better way to start your day!
2. Tamales
Whether you haven't tried chilaquiles for breakfast, tamales will be your definite choice. Tamales are made with corn dough wrapped in banana or corn leaves stuffed with meat, vegetables, chilli, and other ingredients. They are sold in every street corner, every morning, and the most common flavors are raisins, chicken with mole, green sauce with chicken, and poblano pepper slices. However, exotic flavors as pork meat and purslane coated with green sauce are sometimes available – mouth-watering, isn't it? You should always ask for the available flavors, so that you can choose the one you fancy the most.
Attention! The leaf wrapping the tamale is not edible.
Don't forget to accompany your tamale with a delightful and hot atole. Atole is a pre-Hispanic beverage made of corn and water drank in Mexico, Guatemala and other Central American countries. The most common flavors are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, rice pudding, and champurrado.
Bon appetit!
3. Pozole
In Mexico City, you should try a wonderful pozole for lunch in all its different presentations – they vary depending on the Mexican region. You can choose between the red, white, or green broth with corn grain mixed mostly with chicken, pork – or without meat –, lettuce, radish, onion, avocado, oregano, lemon, and
chicharrón.
Once your pozole is ready, help yourself with a tostada with sour cream and sauce – be careful! The sauce might be very spicy. The technique is simple: one bite to your tostada, then a spoonful of pozole.
Give it a try!
4. Elotes
Unmissables!
Elotes are corns that are either boiled in salty water with epazote or charbroiled. Elotes are covered with mayonnaise, lemon, grated cheese, and chilli powder – spicy or not. They are held with a wooden stick so that it can be eaten as a popsicle as it is easier to bite it. Elotes are perfect for a long walk in the city.
5. Quesadillas
Quesadillas are one of the most popular meals in Mexico City. They can be eaten either as breakfast, lunch, or supper. Quesadillas are corn or wheat tortillas stuffed with cheese and any other ingredient such as nopal, chorizo, ham, pumpkin flower,
chicharrón, or whatever you are craving. They are a mandatory meal.
But, what's the difference between a quesadilla and a taco? Well, we like to think that the difference lies on the presentation, but each one tastes and feels overly unalike.
6. Chiles rellenos
Chiles rellenos are one of the most complete meals in Mexican cuisine. Chilli peppers are rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, while the cheese and beans it is stuffed with provide proteins, fat, and vitamins. Chiles rellenos are accompanied with tortillas and/or rice – turning them into a complete meal. Eating chile relleno is a "double-edged sword": the chilli pepper might be spicy or not spicy at all. Yet, we assure you are going to love them.
7. Gorditas
Gorditas are nearly the best-love meals in Mexico City. They are made of fried corn dough stuffed with
chicharrón prensado and curd cheese.
Gorditas are normally accompanied with lettuce, sour cream, cheese, and sauce. As well as tamales, they are easily found in street stands.
8. Tacos de canasta
A taco seller with a wicker basket tied up to a bicycle paints a picturesque image of Mexico City. Its traditional fillings are
chicharrón prensado, potato, beans, marinated meat, and green mole. In buckets tied up to the bicycle, the taco seller carries with him pickled jalapeño, and spicy sauce to prepare your tacos. Once you start eating them, you will never feel it is enough.
For our luck, there are numerous sellers in Ciudad Universitaria which are always supervised and tasted by all of us.
Highly recommended.
